Our Clients

The following are true stories.  We have changed the names to protect the privacy of our clients.

Maria

Maria came to mcs in October.  She had a goal to become a United States naturalized Citizen, so that she could serve her new country better and also enjoy the many benefits possible through U.S. citizenship.  To this end, Maria enrolled in our ESL tutoring program and citizenship classes. She was glad to find these programs without a financial fee through mcs.  In turn, we were glad that we could offer her an opportunity to meet her goals. After 16 months of dedicated attendance of her classes, and preparation for the U.S. citizenship requirement exam, we are proud to announce that Maria recently passed the exams, and that she was sworn in for citizenship the next May.  Furthermore, Maria then enrolled in college-level English classes at Harper College.  What an inspiration she is to our clients and to mcs!

Anna and Elena

Anna, a single mother with two children, and her sister Elena came to mcs with several needs.  They had just moved to Illinois from Colorado, and with the little money they had saved for the move, they were able to rent a modest apartment.  Their hope was that soon they would find jobs to pay the monthly rent and to provide for the most basic needs of the family.  Finding a job became difficult and soon the money ran out.  Anna and Elena found themselves unable to pay for food, shelter and other basic needs.  They started to look for help, and a local church referred them to MCS.  At the interview, we learned of their many needs.

mcs immediately helped them with food and clothing.  Also, with the help of two area churches, mcs raised the money to pay one month’s rent due to their pending eviction.  During this time, they attended our weekly bible study and Pastoral counseling sessions.  John, one of our volunteers, was asked to help the sisters find jobs and to deliver donated furniture to their apartment.  John conveys, “It was fulfilling to be able to help these ladies with their job search and transportation of furniture.  I learned how much more difficult it is for a person who is foreign-born and a single parent to meet his or her needs..”  An mcs employee invited Anna, her two children and Elena to a Hispanic church.  About the time they started attending church, they found jobs as well.

Just the other day, Elena came in with a co-worker who was in need of our services as well.  Anna and Elena know firsthand the blessing of an agency such as ours when facing seemingly impossible circumstances, and in turn, want to tell others about mcs as well.
